RTO is the abbreviated form of Regional Transport Office of India, also known as Regional Transport Authority or RTA. The RTO is an Indian Government bureau responsible for the registration of vehicles and for issuing driver’s licenses all over India.

The post of an RTO officer requires an entrance examination, which is conducted under the public service commission. This exam is conducted by every state and the exams are conducted based on their own rules. An RTO officer has a more dynamic job than that if a normal police inspector, which is why many people are interested in this job.

Posts in a RTO office

There are three types of posts in a RTO office. This is an executive kind of government job, and recruitment, examination and supervision are overseen by the Public Service Commission of every state.

The kinds of jobs you can have as a RTO officer include:

  • Clerical or clerk post.
  • (Sub) Assistant engineer post.
  • Judicial post.

Am I eligible to become an RTO officer?

The eligibility criteria to become an RTO officer depends on the exact post you want:

How to become a RTO clerk:

  • You should be an Indian citizen.
  • The age limit for this post is from 18 to 37 years.
  • You should have completed graduation from a recognized institute and have an educational qualification diploma or equivalent.

How to become a RTO assistant engineer:

  • You should be an Indian citizen.
  • The age limit for this post is within 21 to 35 years.
  • You should have completed Bachelor Degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university.

How to become a RTO judicial servant:

  • You should be an Indian citizen.
  • The age limit for this post is within 21 to 35 years.
  • You should have completed a Bachelor's Degree in Law with at least 55 % marks from a recognized university.

Are there age relaxations to become a RTO officer?

The age range does not apply to everyone: if you want to become a RTO officer, you should check the age relaxations that will allow you to apply even if you're older:

  • If you belong to the OBC (other backward class) category, you will get 3 years of age relaxation.
  • If you belong to an SC (scheduled Caste) or ST (scheduled tribe), you will get 5 years of age relaxation.
  • If you have a physical disability, you will get 10 years of age relaxation.
  • If you are an ex-service member, you will get 5 years of age relaxation.

What minimum marks do you need to become a RTO officer?

  • If you belong to the general or forward class category, your minimum marks should be of 60%.
  • If you belong to SC, ST or OBC categories, your minimum marks should be of 50%.

How does the exam to become a RTO officer work?

There are three stages in the examination to become a RTO officer, which are as follows:

  • Written examination: the syllabus for this stage includes general knowledge, state language, English and an optional subject selected by the candidate. This last subject can be computer science or mechanical engineering, depending on the exact post you want to apply for.
  • Personal interview.
